Lawyers have been urged to embrace technology in order to practice and administer justice in a more efficient, effective, and quality manner.

 

This was the highpoint of speeches, lectures and messages at the 2022 Bar week reception cocktail, dinner of the Nigerian Bar Association, Otuocha Branch.

The 2022 Bar Week, which had as its theme, ‘The Impact of Technology on 21st century Law Practice and Justice Delivery” was held at Nkwelle-Ezunaka, Oyi Local Government Area.

 

While declaring the Bar Week open, the Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu, represented by Justice Mike Okonkwo commended the Otuocha Branch for its diligence and efforts in improving the state’s justice system.

In his welcome address, the chairman, Nigeria Bar Association, Otuocha Branch, Mr. Anthony Okafor, who lauded Governor Chukwuma Soludo, also urged him to continue the good work of transforming Anambra State, disclosing that some colleagues, who have distinguished selves in their various fields would be honoured during the event.

 

He also urged Anambra State Government to expedite action on the renovation of the Otuocha High Court to facilitate the delivery of justice in the area.

 

Contributing, Professor Ogugua Ikpeze in her keynote address titled “Technology and Justice in the Twenty-First Century Law Practice, stated that technological advancement has transformed all aspects of life including legal practice. UPSOT

In his paper titled “Impact of ICT in Justice Delivery and 21st Century Nigerian Lawyer” one of the lead speakers, Reverend Professor Ken Oraegbunam stressed that ICT, which facilitates the spread of information, is regarded as one of the key elements that aid delivery of justice because according to him, many legal activities, can be conducted without physical meeting.

 

Professor Oraegbunam, who outlined some of the issues that the 21st-century lawyer may face, to include lack of employment and funding among others, noted that despite the difficulties, a 21st-century lawyer is tech savvy and as such can be more akin to issues of cybercrime, which is a new area of law with no location barrier in carrying out law practices.
