Anambra State residents have appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to decentralize the ongoing continuous voter registration exercise to ward levels, markets and churches as the new closing date draws near.

This, they said, will get it closer to the people and ensure that no eligible citizen is denied the opportunity to participate in the 2023 general elections.

The residents made the call when ABS monitored the exercise in Awka and Ogidi.

At the places visited, eligible voters in their numbers were already queued as early as seven o’clock in the morning waiting to be attended to by the INEC Officials.

Speaking, one of them, Mr. Emeka Ikemefuna said that he has been visiting the registration center for days and has not been attended to, wondering why only two INEC personnel would be allowed to man a responsibility that is meant for eight or ten persons.

Mr. Ikemefuna described the process as frustrating and appealed to the federal government and other stakeholders to help facilitate the process.

For a trader at Ogidi, Chief Obinna Ozonnia, who expressed displeasure at the process, human rights activists and Civil Society Organizations should be engaged to monitor the process.

Chief Ezennia suggested that it is important to engage the youths and to deploy more machines to speed up the registration exercise.
