The Anambra State Commissioner for Culture, Tourism and Entertainment, Mr. Don Onyenji has called for promotion of Igbo heritage through teaching of History subject in schools to improve the retention of Igbo historical events and practices.

 

The Commissioner stated this while receiving the executives of Ohaneze Ndi Igbo worldwide, Anambra State Chapter led by its Chairman, Chief Emeka Udodeme on a courtesy visit at Jerome Udoji State Secretariat, Awka.

the Commissioner emphasized the importance of children learning about the customs and traditions of Ndigbo in order to prevent cultural extinction.

 

While assuring the union of the Ministry’s support, Commissioner Onyeji echoed the importance of more Igbo celebrations in promoting Igbo culture and harmonizing the indigenous people.

 

Earlier, Chief Udodeme, thanked the Commissioner for the warm reception and stated that the visit was to inform him of the upcoming “World Igbo Day,” which is being celebrated on September thirtieth annually and revealed that the day is set aside to remember Ndigbo who died as a result of the civil war and other unlawful killings.

The Anambra state chairman of Ohaneze Ndigbo maintain that this year’s celebration, rather than the usual joint celebrations by the eastern States, that each state would mark it individually and revealed that this year’s event would not only commemorate the dead but also recognize and encourage those alive who have contributed to development and progress of the Igbo race.
