Illegal structures erected within Nnewi Main Market, in violation of government standard have been marked for removal in a week’s time.
The Anambra state government Joint Task Force on recovery including the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Dr. Obinna Ngonadi, Chairman of Physical Planning Board, Barrister Chike Maduekwe, visited the location, where they gave one-week ultimatum to owners of such structures.
According to Commissioner Ngonadi, the visit was in response to series of reports to Soludo-led administration regarding the illegality and impunity going on in the area .
Dr. Ngonadi who lamented that even a part of the government-owned building that is supposed to house the market union as well as the fire service structure, have all been converted to shops, sold and rented to unsuspecting persons, assuring that they will be reclaimed and put to appropriate use.
He explained that the Physical Planning Board was not aware of any approval of the such illegal structures in the market, adding that after the visit, Nzukora Nnewi and Executives of the market will follow up, to remove shanties and containers which are not part of the market, stressing that such illegal occupants must pay government the cost of removing such structures.
The Commissioner called on the people to support Governor Soludo in building a liveable and prosperous homeland
while expressing satisfaction with the cooporation the market executives have demonstrated so far and authorized them to pull down only the illegal structures within their power and leave the rest for the government.
Also speaking, the President, Nnewi Chamber of Commerce, Mr Jude Osumuo commended Governor Soludo’s efforts at seeing that things are properly done in Anambra, specifically in the markets.
He assured that the market executives and the community will ensure that those patronizing the market and its environment will adhere to law and order as well as ensuring clean environment.
