The Evangelical Fellowship in the Anglican Communion, EFAC, is an arm of the Church given to evangelism across all ages in the life of the Church and humanity. It aims at promoting the supreme authority of the scripture in matters of faith and conduct; to share a commitment to biblical obedience, to foster fellowship and unity among evangelical Anglicans and to function as a resource group to develop and encourage biblically faithful leadership in all spheres of life. Hierarchically, its mode of operation in Nigeria is National, Blocs, Zonal, Sub-zonal and groups.
EFAC Awka zone was born by EFAC Onitsha zone. It was operating in her Churches before the creation of the Diocese of Awka in 1987. Soon after the creation of the diocese, the National Leaders of EFAC deemed it necessary to create EFAC Awka zone as “a single diocese zone”, and severed it from EFAC Onitsha zone. To this end, the then national chairman of EFAC and Bishop of the Diocese of Akure, retire Right Reverend Emmanuel Gbonigi upheld the appointment of the first zonal Co-ordinator, Late Brother Okwudili Ezemenari who was assisted by Brother Nwazor and subsequently by Brother Goddy Mbakwe.
Awka zone at that time comprised of only two sub-zones, Awka and Aguata which are two different autonomous dioceses today. Late Brother Ezemenari led the zone for many years till he was succeeded in 2003 by brother Nduka Okoli. At that time, the present Awka zone was already divided into four sub-zones; Awka, Agulu, Abagana and Mgbakwu. Brother Okoli led the zone till 2009 when he was succeeded by Brother Sunday Obineme. Brother Okoli later became co-ordinator again and handed over to the incumbent, Brother Michael Madumelu. Throughout these years, the fellowship continued waxing stronger and remained focused on its task of spreading the gospel and wining souls for Christ.
Amidst the obstacles faced by EFAC Awka zone, it has many success stories too. The greatest being her reintegration into the mainstream of the church in 2011 by the Bishop of the Diocese of Awka and the current Archbishop of the Province of the Niger, the Most Rev. Alexander C. Ibezim, Ph.D. The Diocesan also graciously assigned a Chaplain to the fellowship, Venerable David C. Ezeobi, who is also the Vicar, St. Lawrence Parish, Mbaukwu and the Archdeacon in charge of Mbaukwu Archdeaconry.
Above all, His Grace, Most Rev. Alexander graciously accepted to host the 2022 EFAC National Convention of the Evangelical Fellowship in the Anglican Communion. It is under the current zonal co-ordinator, Brother Madumelu, that EFAC Awka zone is hosting her National Convention for the first time in the zone which will begin with the clergy and their wives from Monday 15th to 18th August, 2022, at the Cathedral Church of St. Faith, Awka. The General National Convention will commence on the 18th through 21st August, 2022, at the Church of the Holy Spirit field, Awka. Each day of the convention starts at 7:00am with a Holy Communion service, and ends at 9:00pm. Participation is open to all and sundry.
This programme will witness over ten thousand participants from different parts of the country trooping into Awka, the Capital city of Anambra State. God’s blessings will abound in this state as our fathers in the Lord and other saints assemble in our dear state.
By the grace of God, EFAC Awka zone has produced many Priests and missionaries within and outside the Diocese of Awka. She engages in outreaches to some hinterlands like; Nkerehi, Ebenebe, Oba-Ofemili, Amansea, Ugwuoba, Ndikpa and others not mentioned.
The fellowship is determined to taking the gospel of Jesus Christ to the nooks and crannies of this diocese not minding the cost. Every Uka Eke, EFAC embarks on house to house evangelism.
EFAC Awka zone holds her fellowships in all the Churches in the Diocese every Tuesday at 4:30pm, 5:00pm, with their follow-up classes on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays or Sundays depending on the agreement with their Priests. Long live our Archbishop, long live EFAC National Chairman and Bishop of the Diocese of Aguata, Right Reverend Dr. Samuel C. Ezeofo, long live EFAC Nigeria, long live EFAC Eastern Bloc chairman, Right Reverend Dr. Emmanuel Oko-Jaja, long live our Diocesan Chaplain, Venerable David Ezeobi, long live EFAC Awka zonal co-ordinator, Brother Michael Madumelu.
