Anambra Women have been urged to use the ongoing August meeting in various communities to tackle the challenge of undermining the speaking of Igbo language in many Igbo families.
Speaking in Awka, the Vice President Ọhaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Damian Okeke Ogene warned that if unchecked, the growing practice would threaten the Igbo cultural identity.
Paul Ezeoke reports that Chief Okeke Ogene expressed worry that many families even among the elites still see speaking of English to their children as a status symbol and a thing of pride while most Western countries like Russia, as well as Asian countries like China still take pride in promoting their mother tongue even in official circles.
He urged the women to focus on issues that would help promote peace and love in families, adding that successful marriage demands understanding, patience and tolerance while couples should avoid quarrelling and fighting before their children.
Chief Okeke Ogene enjoined them to use the opportunity to exchange ideas on child upbringing to scale up measures in discouraging children from crime and social vices, which he pointed out have multiplier adverse effects on families and communities and expressed satisfaction that the meeting offers a platform for the women to articulate and chart course for community development.
Also speaking, a woman leader and lecturer at the Federal Polytechnic Oko, Dr Uju Mbanisi said the meeting offered a platform to discuss welfare of widows, the elderly and areas to assist in church activities as well as encourage women on the need to strive towards empowering themselves to become self reliant and contribute in supporting their families and communities.
Dr Mbanisi noted that deliberations at the meeting would further encourage women to remain submissive to their husbands as specified by the scripture, take care of their children while avoiding unnecessary rivalry with their husbands in order to maintain peaceful and lively homes.
She urged participants to use what they have learnt from various resource persons to rebuild their homes for a better future.
