Women Empowerment andFight Against Illicit Drugs were the highlights of the 2022 August home and abroad meeting of the women of Mkpunando Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area.
August meeting is a season where women from different communities converge to evaluate their activities in the past year and initiate programmes and projects for the coming year.
Addressing the women at Isiokwe Square, the traditional ruler of the community Igwe Onyeka-Mbanefo regretted that some youths have left the positive values the community was known and asked the women to monitor their children as the community will no longer tolerate any menace.
The member representing Anambra East and West Federal Constituency at the National Assembly and indigene of the community, Chief Chinedu Obidigwe who spoke through Mr Ifeanyi Iloakasia commended the women for their efforts in developing the community, reminding them of their important roles in child upbringing.
In a paper presentation the Assistant Area Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mrs Stella Egwuatu enlightened the women on the inherent dangers and consequences of drug abuse.
Also, in her presentation on the importance of education in the twenty-first century, Dame Theresa Okoye encouraged the women to ensure they train their children and wards to become useful citizens and also called for an end to early marriage of their girl child.
In their separate speeches, Chief Raphel Edeziogor who was honoured as one of the patrons of the women and the President-General of the Community, Mr Chimezie Egbuzor said all that concerned in the community have agreed to fight drug abuse.
While thanking God for the successful August meeting the President-General of the women’s wing, Mrs Ngozi Ananwude appreciated the women for coming together in unity.
The women later presented an award of Grand Patron to Chief Chinedu Obidigwe who gave the children of Mkpunando Aguleri scholarship for both primary and secondary education while cutting of the cake, training on soap making and other cultural displays also featured at the meeting.
