As part of efforts to ensure all round participation in the monthly sanitation exercise, the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe has flagged off the August edition of the exercise.
The event, which took place at Onitsha, attracted members of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, National Youth Service Corps, the Transition Committee chairmen of Onitsha North and South Council Areas, industrialists, traders, residents as well as stakeholders in the community.
Flagging off the exercise, Igwe Achebe thanked the state government for the commitment and priority placed on the environment, promising that he will mobilize residents of the commercial city to key into the lofty vision of government.
Igwe Achebe, represented by Chief Sam Chidebelu, during breaking of kola nut, prayed for the good health of the state citizenry, calling on all to participate to avoid the wrath of the law.
For the Commissioner for Environment, Engineer Felix Odimegwu, more emphasis should be placed on evacuating drainages especially in markets, residential areas and tasked the Transition Committee Chairmen to drive the move already kicked off by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
Also speaking, the Chairman, Anambra State Waste Management Agency, ASWAMA Board, Dr. Emma Ezenwaji described the flag off as important considering the commercial city’s impact in industrialization, trade and commerce.
The Managing Director of ASWAMA, Mr. Mike Ozoemena said that so far the agency has inaugurated waste management officers in all the local government areas and wards and asked the committees to establish good work relationship with waste management contractors to ensure regular evacuation of refuse.
Responding, the Transition, Committee chairman and for Onitsha North, Mr. Onochie Ozoma disclosed that the Council had mapped out different areas to intensify the drive, promising that Onitsha will raise the bar in cleanliness.
