Following flood prediction by the Nigeria MetrologicalAgency, NIMET, the National Orientation Agency, NOA, has given Ndi Anambra guidelines on how to avoid tragic effects of flooding.
Queen Anigbogu reports that this was made known by the Anambra State Director of NOA, Barrister Charles Nworji, during an advocacy visit to the Association of Past Presidents-General in Anambra State, APPAS, in Awka.
Barrister Nworji, who reiterated that NIMET had predicted that there will be flash floods in August and September this year, called on people living or doing businesses along coastal areas to move upland to avert dangers associated with flooding, which he said include destruction of lives and property.
He advised residents of the state to be environmentally responsible by clearing water channels, regularly desilting drainages, properly disposing of wastes and avoiding driving through fast flowing or dormant flood to avoid being swept away by flood.
The NOA Director further advised that structures built on waterways be brought down, and commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo and the Anambra State Waste Management Authority,ASWAMA, for their stance on environmental sanitation,which he said is yielding dividends.
Responding, the National President of APPAS, Chief Omeife Omeife, recalled how he lost one of his cousins five years ago to flooding, and appealed to members of the association to disseminate the information to the grassrootto avert a repeat of such tragedy in Anambra State.
He noted that the association is impressed with the advocacy work NOA is doing,and assured them of maximum support to achieveset goals.
The Anambra State Deputy Director of NOA, Sir Joseph Uchendu, Director of Administration, Mrs Ijeoma Nzewi, were among NOA officials that accompanied the state Director on the visit.
