Stakeholders Interactive Forum, organised by Standard Organisation of Nigerian, SON, has ended with a call on relevant stakeholders to join efforts with the organization towards achieving the cooperation of all manufacturers, consumers, service providers and government at all levels in ensuring that confidence and value are built in local products standardisation.

 

The event, held in Awka, has “Building confidence, value in local products standardisation”, as its theme,with the Head of Department of Civil Engineering, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Associate Professor Celestine Ezeagu as resource person,including participants drawn from the private and media sectors.

In his keynote speech, the Director General of SON, Mallam Farouk Salim, represented by the Director, Anambra Regional Operations, SON, Mr Don-Pedro Papaye, explained that the goal of standardisation, which cuts across every field of endeavor, remains to ensure uniformity to certain practices within the industry, focusing on product creation process, operations of businesses, technology in use, and how specific compulsory processes are instituted or carried out.

 

He listed benefits of standardisation, especially in manufacturing, to include consumers confidence, value addition, greater clarity and predictability, consistent quality and reduction of waste, adding that SON has, through its statutory mandates, continued to ensure and enforce compliance of locally manufactured products to standards and building confidence through training, technical assistance, product registration, Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme, MANCAP, Nigerian Quality Award, NQA,among others.

Noting that standardisation is a global issue, the SON DG said Nigeria can not afford to lag behind in the comity of nation if it desires economic development.

 

Contributing, the Director, National Metrology Institute, SON, Engineer Bede Obayi, and the Senior Special Assistant to the DG SON, Chief Emeka Duru, said the choice of Anambra State for the forum was because of its abundant economic potentials, adding that SON is intensifying efforts to check influx of substandard products in Nigeria, including manning boarders.

The National Vice President , Nigeria Association of Chamber of Commerce andPresident, Southeast Chamber of Commerce, Mr Humphrey Ngonadi, who commended SON for its efforts towards addressing influx of substandard products in Nigeria, said eighty percent of Nigerian Manufacturers produce quality products.

 

Others at the event that featured presentation of certificate to participants, including Mrs Maryann Okoyefi, an engineer and Chinyere Orjiakor, asked questions on areas affecting their operations.
