A philanthropist, Chief Emeka Agba recently celebrated new yam festival in Akpu, where the rich culture of the community was brought to limelight.

 

The colourful maiden festivity held in his country home Akpu, Orumba South Council area attracted village members and friends from across the state.

The event started with a thanksgiving mass at St. Matthews Catholic Church Akpu, where he appreciated God for bountiful harvest.

 

Describing new yam festival as an age long culture set aside to express gratitude to God for good harvest and offering prayers for better season ahead, the parish priest, Reverend Father Obioma Okeke, described the celebrant as a blessing to the community.

Performing the kolanut ritual, Chief Agba who thanked God for a successful planting season underscored the significance of new yam festival in educating the younger generations as regards to Igbo cultural heritage.

 

He called on the government to assist farmers with loan to ensure food sufficiency and reaffirmed his commitment towards improving lives and alleviating the plight of the downtrodden through his foundation.

Eulogizing Chief Agba for his kind gesture towards the well-being of the people and upliftment of the community, a cabinet member Chief Alexander Okoli commended him for the passion in championing the course for humanity.

 

Some friends who came to identify with him, including Engineer Adindu Okwudili and chief Obumneme Ofoma, explained that new yam festival has remained a sustainable way to promote peace among communities.

Speaking to ABS, a beneficiary of the foundation, Mrs. Nwanneka Nwafor recounted life touching initiatives of the foundation, and prayed God to bless the benefactor.

 

The event featured symbolic cutting of the new yam and masquerade outing.
