Despite being a food basket and headquarters of Awka North Local Government Area, Achalla community is still lacking basic infrastructure for improved agricultural practice, social life, among others.

 

The President General of Achalla Improvement Union, Comrade Nnamdi Ikwunne, stated this at the 2022 iwa ji festival organised by Udezu Ayigo village at Amabuegwu square in the community.

 

Comrade Ikwunne, who called for government’s attention to the pressing infrastructural needs of the community to enable it continuously play her part in ensuring food security, called on people especially the youths, to use the forthcoming 2023 general elections to relaunch the nation on the path of sustainable development by electing people who are responsive to the yearnings of the masses and noted that yam is symbolic in Igbo and Achalla culture.

 

The chairman of Udezu Welfare Association and Chairman on the occasion, Mr. Ifeanyi Atuanya, said that though some of them live outside their community, they still show interest in agricultural practices in Achalla, and called for government’s attention to the needs of the farmers and people of the area, by providing farm input and infrastructural development.

An illustrious son of the community and Young Progressive Party candidate for Awka North and South Federal Constituency, Mr. Kingsley Uyamadu, who described the 2022 festival in the area as unprecedented, historic and landmark, thanked Governor Chukwuma Soludo for the Amansea – Awba-ofemmili road project being part of the efforts to open up the area, adding that more infrastructural development, as well as agric free trade zone is needed to unlock agricultural and economic potential of the community and the entire Awka North council area.

 

The Secretary General of Alor Achalla, the custodian of Achalla culture, Mr. Ezewulu Madubueze, spoke on behalf of the elders and members of the group at the event which featured masquerade and different cultural dance displays among numerous side attractions.
