The Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital Amaku Awka, Dr. Joe Akabuike has appealed to doctors to devise a viable means of pressing home their demands rather than strike actions at all times.
Dr. Akabuike made this appeal during the forty-second National Association of Resident Doctors Annual General Meeting held at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, Abia state.
The conference which has its theme as “Lasting Strategies for Healthcare Development in Nigeria: A Panacea for Preventing Industrial Actions and Brain Drain” had in attendance medical doctors from across Nigeria, the Governor of Abia state, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu represented by his Deputy, Chief Ude Oko Chukwu, among others.
Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Abubuike appreciated the doctors for the meeting at a crucial time in Nigeria’s history and appealed to them to devise a more practicable means of pressing home their demands rather than strike actions at all times.
The COOUTH CMD, regretted that the continuous industrial disharmony with the government by the resident doctors, have had adverse effects on the patients as well as contribute to the embarrassing brain drain threatening the profession today.
Dr. Akabuike further called on Governments at all levels to always take the issue of workers welfare seriously, especially those in the health sector which he said are doing a wonderful job, amidst unfavorable working conditions, poor remunerations among others.
Earlier, the National President of the Association, Dr. Godiya Ishaya described this year’s meeting as worthwhile and urged their members to continue to uphold all the professional ethics applicable to their jobs at all times.
Dr. Akabuike later toured the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, visited Renal Complex and Dialysis Ward in the hospital to exchange ideas and knowledge on the management of patients with kidney related conditions.
