Anglican Priest Ekweozor Unveils Two Books On Origin Of Ndigbo In Awka

Two books on the origin of Ndigbo have been launched by an Anglican Priest, Reverend Canon Charles Ekweozor, using biblical narrative.

The books titled “The Origin Of Ndigbo: Exploring New Perspectives In Tracing The Black Jews Of Africa”, and “Replacing Faulty Ideologies: A Redefinition Of The Concept Of Omenani Using Biblical and Theological Principles” were launched in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

The author, Reverend Canon Ekweozor, of the Diocese of Pankshin, told ABS that his early exposure to books relating to Igbo history, especially after the Nigeria-Biafra civil war, prompted him to go deep into research; using new approaches to tell the origin of Ndigbo.

He explained that the books take readers deep into the bible, especially as it concerns the culture and traditions of the Jews, and relate them to Igbo custom and origin.

In his remark, the Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwumma Soludo emphasized that history is important in the lives of a people, a reason for the state government’s effort in reintroducing history as a subject in secondary schools.

Represented by the Commissioner for Entertainment, Culture and Tourism, Comrade Don Onyenji, Governor Soludo also remarked that a lot of efforts have been made to trace and record the origin of Ndigbo by scholars, and commended the author for his efforts, especially with his deep research and narrative on the origin of Ndigbo, which he said is important in telling the Igbo story better.

The traditional ruler of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, who called for conscious efforts in promoting the Igbo culture and traditions in school, especially at the basic level, said students must be encouraged to know their traditions and culture, and be proud of them.

The chief launcher of the books, Chief Nathan Ogbatue, represented by his brother, Ifeanyi called on Ndigbo to know their origin and be proud of their race, and commended the author for his rich academic research.

On their parts, the traditional ruler of Umuawulu, Igwe Joel Egwuonwu, and the Chairman of Governing Board, Anambra Waste Management Authority, ASWAMA, Dr. Emma Ezewaji noted that the books will contribute to the knowledge of Igbo history, and recommended them to those who are interested in the Igbo history and origin.
