Anambra state Governor’s wife, Mrs Nonye Soludo has said that winning the war against every form of domestic violence and abuses could remain a mirage if offenders continue to get mild sanctions.
Mrs Soludo who was speaking in Awka, observed that the law must assume firmer and tougher positions in punishing those who have been found guilty of violent abuses.
The governor’s wife explained that in cases where those who have been found guilty of rape, child molestation and exploitation, sex trafficking and trafficking for labour and domestic violence, among other related crimes, are given lax punishment in neglect of the gravity of their offences, more escape routes are indirectly being opened up for intending culprits.
She emphasized that while the crusade to eliminate all forms of social degradations is a collective duty, the judiciary as an important organ in the process of rule of law must show greater commitment in interpreting relevant laws.
Mrs Soludo also urged litigants in such cases to always insist on verdicts commensurate to each crime, adding that by doing so, the zeal of the campaign would yield the desired goals.
The Anambra Governor’s wife, said that she would continue to be in the vanguard of a morally driven advocacy.
She hailed the efforts of the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, to save those who are going through all kinds of abuse and called for larger support from the society to help eradicate the scourge from Anambra State.
