Anambra State House of Assembly has invited the Managing Director of Anambra State Waste Management Authority, ASWAMA, Mr. Mike Ozoemena to appear before it today, Thursday, to explain the reason for the new waste management fees spelt out for Ndi Anambra by the agency.

The House had earlier passed a resolution suspending the new waste management fees with immediate effect.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by the member representing Nnewi North Constituency, Honourable Nonso-Smart Okafor.

While sponsoring the motion, Honourable Okafor explained that an existing law of Anambra State tagged “Anambra State Waste Management Law 2015” stipulates various fees payable by various groups for waste management.

He noted that a release by the ASWAMA signed by its Managing Director directing the public to pay various sums of money is not in consonant with the existing law.

On his part, the member representing Dunukofia Constituency, Chief Lawrence Ezeudu, who seconded the motion, expressed concern over complaints emanating from the public because of the release and stressed the need for ASWAMA Boss to appear before the House to explain the reason behind his action.

In their separate speeches, the Chief Whip, Dr. Pete Ibida, the Deputy Majority Leader, Sir Emeka Aforka and the member representing Anaocha Two Constituency, Honourable Ejike Okechukwu, lamented that the fees will be very difficult for the people of Anambra State to pay considering the economic situation of the country.

The Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Uche Okafor, read out the resolution of the house, while lawmakers supported it through voice vote.
