Anambra State Co-ordination office of the Federal government IFAD-VCDP/ has distributed farm implements worth millions of naira to farmers to cushion the effects of deluge.
The farmers who were drawn from eight Local Government Areas including, Orumba South, Ogbaru, Ihiala, among others, received over forty Point of Sale machines, chemical spraying machines, agro-processing machines, safety wears, open body tricycles, commercial frying machines among others.
The Anambra State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Forster Ihejiofor, while Presenting the equipment to the farmers encouraged them to migrate to regenerative agriculture for better mechanized farming and assured them that in no distant time, the state will establish demonstration farms across the twenty-one Local Government Areas for easy adoption.
Dr Ihejiofor challenged the farmers to see the support from the Federal Government /IFAD-VCDP as not free, as their maintenance of the equipment and return on investment will go a long way in expanding the agricultural value chain of the state with more financial stability in their respective cooperative societies.
The Anambra State Programme Co-ordinator of Federal government/IFAD/VCDP, Mr. Nnamdi Agwuncha who highlighted achievements of the agency, listed training of youths in rice production and cassava development of two hundred and eighty four hectares of land, solar powered functional boreholes and construction of about twenty-three kilometers of feeder roads to the farms with culverts among numerous others.
According to Mr. Agwuncha, the equipment distributed were due to challenges faced by the farmers as they will assist them with low rate charges to evacuate their farm produce geared towards reducing the price of food commodity in markets.
He appreciated the State government for its support to the programme and pointed out that plans are in top gear to cushion the effects of flooding by the federal government.
Receiving the equipment, some representatives of the co-operative societies, including Mr Francis Uyanne from Ogbaru and Mrs Ifeanyichukwu Edith from Ihiala, expressed gratitude for the equipment and recalled the challenges farmers are facing in evacuating their goods from their farms which most times, limit their size of harvest and loss of goods.
Another farmer, Mrs. Chinasa Nwafor from Orumba South Local Government Area said that the distribution of the Point of Sale machines will ensure their financial security and equally be a source of extra business opportunities from the comfort of their homes.
