The October edition of monthly sanitation exercise in Anambra State, recorded low compliance in Awka, and its environs.

Usual human and vehicular movements on streets and major roads in the areas visited at the time of the exercise.

However, commercial activities were minimal, as most shops and markets were under lock and key.

While few persons were seen participating in the exercise, waste evacuation was carried out by the Anambra State Waste Management Authority, ASWAMA and men of Anambra State Joint Enforcement Team, were seen at strategic locations enforcing compliance.

Areas visited included Aroma Junction, Nkwo Amenyi, Eke Awka among others.

Speaking to the ABS, the Managing Director of Anambra State Waste Management Authority, Mr Mike Ozoemena, who rated compliance to this month’s exercise below thirty percent expressed displeasure with non-compliance, especially by some traders in Awka Market and noted that it is very important to bag wastes properly for easy collection and disposal.

On his part, the Transition Committee Chairman of Awka South Local Government Area, Mr Thankgod Anagor represented by Prince Ikechukwu Ndigwe, said that the Local Government Area with the support of the state government is committed to enforcing the sanitation laws and asked residents to either key into the sanitation exercise or face the full wrath of the law.

The team leader of Anambra State Joint Enforcement Team, Mr Favor Okwudili, while noting that compliance is key to achieving the objectives of the exercise, expressed optimism that next month’s exercise will record improvement, as the enforcement team is determined to help in achieving clean and healthy Anambra in line with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision.

Some residents who joined in the sanitation, including Ifeoma Nnoli and Ikechukwu Eze, commended the State government for its efforts at cleaning up the state, urging other traders to complement government’s efforts by keeping their shops and surroundings clean.

A defaulter who gave her name as Miss Chinelo Efibe, pleaded for more sensitization, which according to her, will help more people to comply.
