Governor Chukwuma Soludo has commended the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Anambra State Council for adhering to professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

 

Governor Soludo gave the commendation during the 2022 NUJ Press Week which also featured the investiture of Woman of the Year by the council at the Godwin Ezemo International Press Center in Awka.

Governor Soludo, represented by the Commissioner for Information, Sir Paul Nwosu, stated that despite the opportunities provided by social media, it still lacks the essential of journalism that includes disseminating information that has been fact-checked, accurate, and well-structured before publication and urged journalists to continue to protect the ethics of the profession.

 

Governor Soludo praised the union for an eventful week and called for social media regulation to ensure accountability and accurate information.

The Senatorial candidate of the All Progressive Congress, APC for Anambra Central Senatorial District in the 2023 general elections Chief Kodilichukwu Okelekwe, told members of the union that they have an important role to play in the forthcoming election by ensuring that the citizens are well educated on the right qualities of a leader.

 

Chief Okelekwe praised the State government for its efforts to combat insecurity as well as the Nigeria Union of Journalists for its accurate projection of activities in the state and the nation at large.

 

Speaking on the selection of Dame Adaora Umeoji, Deputy Managing Director of Zenith Bank as the NUJ Woman of the Year, the Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists Anambra State Council, Dr Emeka Odogwu described it as a well-deserved award because she has played a tremendous role in the society through her humanitarian activities and investment in the state to bring about development.

An award as Anambra State NUJ matriarch was also given to the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Paul University, Awka, Professor Stella Okunna.

 

The event had as its theme ‘Traditional Media and Threat of the Social Media: Implications for National Development’.

 

Speaking on the theme, the keynote speaker, Mr Victor Ogene, who is the candidate of the Labour Party for Ogbaru Federal Constituency in next year’s general election stated that as the internet brought globalization to the world, the use of social media platforms also dominated.

 

 

 

He explained the implication of social media, including individuals, governments, and organizations being scrutinized by the public on daily basis

 

Others who spoke on the theme were the member representing Oyi and Ayamelum Federal Constituency, Chief Vincent Ofumelu, Managing Director, Anambra Broadcasting Service, Sir Chido Obidiegwu and Head of Department of Mass Communication Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Professor Angela Nwamuo.
