Residents of Anambra State displaced by the recent flood disaster are optimistic to receive international support to cushion the devastating effects of the deluge following the visit of some international organizations.

 

The international organizations are the UNICEF, World Health Organization, WHO, United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs, and International Organization for Migration, a United Nations Migration Agency.

During the visit led by the state deputy governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, it was observed that the flood is gradually receding, but people are still displaced as a lot of houses were destroyed and residents’ means of livelihood lost.

 

It was also observed that the only major federal road linking Ogbaru to Onitsha has collapsed.

Addressing people at one of the holding centers at Ogbaru Local Government Area, Deputy Governor Ibezim encouraged them to be patient as the state government will continue to do the needful to ensure their comfort, disclosing that plans have been completed towards making sure that they go back to their normal lives as soon as the flood recedes.

 

Speaking, the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr. Matthias Schmale, who led the team from the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, promised to ensure that they receive succor from the international community as well as helping to bring permanent solution to the disaster.

The chief of staff to the governor, Mr, Earnest Ezeajughi, Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Felix Odimegwu, Deputy Chief of Staff, Office of the Deputy Governor, Mr. Ugochukwu Obiefuna, Transition Committee Chairman for Anambra East Council Area, Dr Anselm Onuorah, his Anambra West counterpart, Mr. Felix Ikechi among others, joined in the visit.
