Anambra State Government has requested its citizens to be mindful of their environment to be able to address some of the ecological issues facing the state.

 

The Commissioner for Environment, Engineer Felix Odimegwu made the request during a one- day Youth Leadership Workshop at Onitsha.

The workshop was organized by the Nigeria Youth SDGs Network, NGYouthSDGs, a youth led and youth serving civil society organization advocating meaningful engagement of young Nigerians in attaining United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

 

The programme, which featured capacity building, training and advocacy workshop, explored good practices for young people to develop individual skills and means to become advocates against climate change.

The workshop themed: ‘Climate Justice and Change in Attendance’ engaged participants in a parliamentary session debate and sharing of ideas for best policy practices and recommendations.

 

Speaking, Commissioner Odimegwu, who spoke through the director, Ecology Department in the ministry, Mrs. Ifeoma Onuzulike, said that climate change is man-made and advocated massive awareness on the implication of destroying the environment, including cutting of trees, blocking of drainages and indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

He called for attitudinal change on the environment as no human can survive without the environment and concluded by asking the youths to leverage on the opportunity to widen the scope of their knowledge.

 

Speaking, the state chairman of the network, Mrs. Chidinma Okoye, pointed out that the aim of the workshop was to provide training for youths in the six geopolitical zones of the country to develop their skills and exchange ideas on climate issues.

 

According to her, the workshop was also to prepare them ahead of the COP-27 coming up on November six, 2022 at Egypt.

A resource person, Mr. Johnbosco Ibekwe, revealed that some of the environmental disasters facing the nation are as a result of careless human treatment and warned that without proper care of the environment, there is no solution to climate change.

 

Mrs. Chioma Chukwuemeka from Onitsha, Mr. Okwunna Ikwuazom from Nnewi and Chinedu Ololo from Awka, called for a policy to mitigate climate change.
