The ancient kingdom of Obosi has celebrated her 2022 Obiora festival in a grand style.
Staff reporter, Emengini Osadebe reports the annual event held at Igwe’s palace, Umuota Obosi, was aimed at thanking God for a bountiful harvest, and featured installation of the Project Manager, second Niger Bridge, Mr Fredrick Weiser, as “Agu Si Mba” of Obosi by Igwe Chidubem Iweka the third.
The venue of the festival was filled to capacity with Ndi Obosi, friends and well-wishers who identified and felicitated with the community on the festival also known as iwa ji.
In his remarks at the event, an illustrious son of Obosi community, Bishop Chuka Agwuegbo, who spoke on the theme “we will give account one day”, called on the people to shun evil and make decision on where they will spend eternity, adding that choices made will affect their future.
Addressing the gathering, Igwe Iweka described Obiora Obosi celebration as an opportunity to settle disputes and enthrone peace in the community.
While thanking God for a bountiful harvest at this year’s planting season, Igwe Iweka also thanked his subjects for their unflinching support to the throne, and commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his developmental efforts, especially in the area of road construction and other new innovations across the state.
In an interview with the ABS, the Igwe’s wife, Eze Nwanyi Kosisochukwu Iweka explained that Obiora Obosi is all about celebrating peace and unity in the community, and called on younger generation to sustain their cultural heritage for posterity.
Also speaking to the ABS, the state Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engineer Ifeanyi Okoma said upholding the cultural heritage of Ndi Anambra is in line with the Soludo administration’s initiative, and prayed for peace in Obosi and Anambra in general.
In their separate comments, members of Ndi Ichie Obosi, including Ikedioramma Obosi, Chief Emeka Asimonye, and Igweoba Obosi, Chief Emma Muonago, as well as President of Otu Enyi Obosi, Dr Vivian Onwuekwe described Obiora Obosi as a festival that unites members of the community and provides them the opportunity to showcase their cultural heritage for the benefit of the younger generation, whom they advised to stay away from evil and other social vices that could mar their future.
The Project Manager, second Niger Bridge, Mr Weiser, who was installed as “Agu Si Mba” of Obosi, appreciated Ndi Obosi and Igwe Iweka for the honor and prayed for long life for the Igwe and peace in Obosi community.
Others who spoke at the event, including the former President General of Obosi Development Union, Mr Ikenna Bosah, and Obosi Palace Secretary, Chief Shedrak Igwebike thanked God for a successful outing, describing the event as another way of preserving their culture and a period of togetherness in the community.
Highpoint of the event were cutting and distribution of roasted yam by Igwe Iweka to children, payment of homage to the Igwe by various groups, display of “egwu ota” dance steps by Ndi Ichie Obosi, as well as masquerades.
