Eight males and One female inmates of Onitsha Correctional Center have regained their freedom following a jail delivery exercise embarked on by the Anambra State Chief Judge, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu.

 

The exercise which attracted judges of various High Courts and legal luminaries was held at the facility’s Chapel Akpaka Marine area, Onitsha.

Following court proceedings those whose cases were struck out, discharged and acquitted include Ifeanyi Egwuatu from Nzam, Okechukwu Okeke from Awkuzu, Uwadiegwu Ede from Enugu State, Johnson Ojukwu Okolo and Ebuka Molokwu from Ogidi.

 

Others are Arinze Nwoke from Ebonyi State, Francis Oluchukwu from Imo State, Akukananwa Amandu and Mmesoma Okafor, the only female.

Over nine cases were adjourned from November 11th 2022 to February 2023, while Some inmates were granted bail with a fine of fifty thousand naira and hundred thousand Naira respectively.

 

According to Justice Anyachebelu, the jail delivery exercise which has become an annual ritual for every Chief judge in company of members of the judiciary was aimed at decongesting the correction center saying that cases treated were those ones that have lingered for so long.

He frowned at a situation where some inmates were kept in custody for long without going to the court, describing such situation as a special case which needs to be handled urgently.

 

Reacting, the Deputy Comptroller in charge of Onitsha Correctional Center Mr Val Nwosu, expressed excitement over the Chief judge ‘s visit which according to him is always looked forward to by the center as it helps in decongesting the facility.

 

Mr Nwosu called on the judiciary to help quicken the dispensation of justice in order to contain the number of inmates in the facility as according to him, crime is been committed every day.
