About twenty-two million naira worth of enhanced smart agricultural equipment have been distributed to farmers across the eight Federal government/ IFAD VCDP participating Local Government Areas for dry season farming in Anambra State.

 

Also distributed were over one point five million naira worth of simple hand tools for road maintenance to the newly added Local Government Areas of Orumba South, Ihiala and Ogbaru.

Agric Correspondent Chibuzor Obidike reports that the equipment are one hundred and five water pumps, Knapsacks sprayers and complete kits, wheelbarrows, Diggers, Rakes, cutlasses among others.

 

Inaugurating the distribution exercise at the state Agricultural Development Programme office in Awka, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr Foster Ihejiofor, charged the beneficiaries to judiciously put the equipment to good use to close the yearning gap in food supply created by the recent flooding.

Dr Ihejiofor, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Chinedu Ike, enjoined famers in Anambra State to migrate to regenerative agriculture to produce healthy foods.

 

In his remark, the State Programme Co-ordinator, Federal Government/IFAD VCDP, Mr. Nnamdi Agwuncha, while announcing the release of five million dollars by IFAD for farmers affected by the deluge in Nigeria, disclosed that the State Co-ordination office of the Federal Government/IFAD VCDP will commence input disbursement for 2022 dry season farming next week.

Mr. Agwuncha re-emphasized the need for them to insure their farms against disasters like the deluge to have a fall back when indemnified.

 

Earlier during a refresher course on best agronomic practices in Rice and Cassava farming, the state Agric Production Officer, Federal Government/IFAD VCDP, Mr. Emmanuel Chukwukwelu disclosed that a total of one hundred and twenty hectares of Rice farm was approved for Anambra State for the dry season farming encouraging them not to loose hope.

For another resource person, Mr. Ifeanyi Okoye, who took them on Spraying Technology, advised them to be well kitted and identify the class of weed to know the best herbicides to use.
