The National Population Commission has called on Ndi Anambra to support the commission in its efforts to give Nigeria a reliable demographic data through the forthcoming Census.
The Commissioner representing Anambra State in the National Population Commission Mr Chidi Ezeoke, made the call during a two-day workshop on Compendium of Locality on 2023 Population Housing Census, organized by the Commission in collaboration with the Anambra State government in Awka.
Mr Ezeoke explained that the Compendium of Localities will be presented to President Muhammadu Buhari before the 2023 Population and Housing Census which he said is intended to be an aggregation of the consensus of stakeholders across the federation and will be placed in the Gazette places and names for the country.
He assured that this will be purposely relevant in the drive towards sustainable national development, noting that the Commission is committed to ensuring that everything about the census is done professionally.
In his remarks, the Secretary to the Anambra State Government, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu, represented by Mrs Onyinyechi Edokwe, called on the National Population Commission to pay special attention to peculiarities in Anambra State to ensure that the state is properly counted.
He charged the participants to take the message of the workshop down to the grassroots to ensure that their people participate actively in the forthcoming national census.
In his address, the Director of National Population Commission in Anambra State, Dr Joachin Ulasi, appreciated Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his support to the Commission and local government chairmen and Presidents-General for their support during the Enumeration Area Demarcation.
In his good will message, the Director, National Orientation Agency in Anambra State Barrister Charles Nwoji, noted that National Orientation Agency intends to change the narrative by using their available platforms and robust structure to create widespread awareness to motivate persons, families and groups to get counted.
The President, Anambra State Association of Town Unions, Barrister Titus Akpudo, thanked God for the sensitization about the census which he noted started early in Anambra State and told the Presidents-General to give the exercise necessary support.
Also speaking, the representative of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mr Kingsley Anoforo, commended the collaboration between Independent National Electoral Commission, and National Orientation Agency to achieve national developmental goals and used the opportunity to informed Ndi Anambra that Independent National Electoral Commission, is recruiting ad hoc staff for the next election and encourage them to apply.
Digital display of locality maps for the State, presentation of the State’s’ locality lists, interaction with stakeholders featured during the event which attracted Presidents-General of various communities in Anambra State, political appointees among others.
The Compendium of Localities in census is a tool for data dissemination as well as for national planning and development.
