Bad leadership and political insecurity have been identified as the bane of Nigeria’s woes while the failure of the leaders to live up to their responsibilities it was said left the country in the terrible state it is today.
A Constitutional Lawyer and Human Rights Activist, Chief Mike Ozekhome, stated this during the Eleventh Zik Lecture Series anchored by the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
The Zik Lecture Series held at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, is an annual event which began eleven years ago in honour of the late Nigeria’s foremost nationalist, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe.
Chief Ozekhome said while there is need for Nigeria to remain one united entity, such unity should not be taken for granted, rather it should be nurtured and respected citing several countries that have disintegrated as a result of marginalization of one section of the countries.
He urged Nigerians to use the opportunity of 2023 election to elect competent leaders that would address the many problems facing the country even as he expressed fears that insecurity in Nigeria if not checked, would pose a major challenge to the general election.
The Human Rights Activist appealed to the federal government to release Nnamdi Kanu to bring peace and tranquility to the South East.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Professor Charles Esimone, thanked the benefactor of the event, Senator Ben Obi, for attracting notable personalities annually to the Lecture Series noting that it will provide a platform to strengthen good governance in Nigeria.
Also speaking, a former Chief of General Staff, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe, explained that the Lecture Series was one of the ways to immortalize Zik who believed in education as a pathfinder to self and national development.
The theme of the day was, “Nigeria in the Throes of Insecurity Towards 2023, Any Panacea?”.
The traditional ruler of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe and the traditional ruler of Awka, ObiGibson Nwosu, were among the arrays of dignitaries that graced the occasion.
