Tomorrow, Saturday, 19th November, 2022 will be the grand finale of series of activities lined up to mark the Pearl Anniversary of Saint Mary the Virgin Convent, Ufuma, Orumba North Local Government Area.
The event, which will be under the chairmanship of a renowned philanthropist, Honorable Princeton Madu, will also feature launching for a chapel building. The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, and the Chancellor of Aguata Diocese of the Anglican Communion, Justice Peter Obiora are guests of honour, while the President of the Women’s Ministry in Aguata Anglican Diocese, Mrs Chinyere Ezeofor is the mother of the day with the traditional ruler of Ufuma, His Royal Highness, Igwe Chika Uchime (Diji the second) as the royal father of the day.
The Pearl Anniversary celebration which means that Saint Mary the Virgin Convent, Ufuma has clocked 30 will take place in the school’s premises, opposite Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Ufuma, beginning at ten o’clock in the morning.
Saint Mary the Virgin Convent, Ufuma, was founded in 1992 by the Anglican community of the Old Awka Diocese before the creation of Aguata Diocese on 4th September, 2005.
Aguata Diocese inherited the school from Old Awka Diocese shortly after its creation in 2005 and began to invest to sustain the gains already recorded by the founding father of the school and pioneer Bishop of Awka Diocese, the Most Reverend Maxwell Anikwenwa, OFR.
A cardinal essence of setting up the school was to check the rate of moral decadence in the society especially among youths and to check the decay in the nation’s secondary school system, especially with regards to girls schools.
Saint Mary the Virgin Convent, Ufuma, being a complete boarding school made it mandatory that all the students must live in the hostel to enable the teachers take proper care of them, in order not to defeat the purpose of establishing it knowing fully well that holistic and all round education can only be achieved when a student is living and studying within the school without family and domestic distractions.
Apart from quality teaching and learning with mordern facilities including technical, vocational, information communication technology, etc, students are well-groomed while sound morals are always inculcated in them to help them become role models.
With committed teachers and mordern teaching facilities, students of Saint Mary the Virgin Convent, Ufuma have continued to excel, coming out with excellent results in WAEC, NECO and other examinations.
At this juncture, the proprietors of the school including the pioneer bishop of Aguata Diocese, Most Reverend Christian Efobi and the incumbent bishop, the Right Reverend Samuel Ezeofor, should be commended for their love and support to both the teachers and students of the convent, especially in ensuring workers’ welfare and in taking the students as their own children through regular visitations, guidance and counseling.
It is on record that Bishop Ezeofor, in the inception of his episcopacy completed the one-storey principal and staff quarters, provided borehole in the school, equipped the school library and introduced ICT programme to encourage E-learning.
The Women’s Ministry under Mrs Chinyere Ezeofor also needs a pat on the back for constructing a modern kitchen, a standard dining hall and a multi purpose hall in the school.
During the talent exhibition by Saint Mary the Virgin Convent, Ufuma students normally showcase their skills in agriculture, garment making, music, arts, home management and sciences. The Students also participated in the 2017 League of Anambra State Professionals’ school quiz, coming third at the local government level, and came second in a quiz between diocesan schools in 2017.
In 2020, the school came second and third in science and art respectively at the diocesan level and third position in art at the provincial level. It also took third position in the provincial mathematics quiz sponsored by the Archbishop Ecclesiastical Province of the Niger and Bishop of Awka Diocese, His Grace, the Most Reverend Alexander Ibezim, JP, PhD.
From all indications, one can see that Saint Mary the Virgin Convent, Ufuma owned by the Aguata Diocese of the Anglican Communion is giving the students all round education and parents and guardians are advised to send their children and wards to the convent to prepare their children for the future.
As the school marks its Pearl Anniversary tomorrow, the principal, Mrs Constance Umeh, chairperson, school management board, Mrs Ngozi Orazulume, and the chairman, central planning committee, Dr Chika Eni are inviting the public and lovers of education to the event.
