Wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Mrs Nonye Soludo, has explained that most of the problems faced by the present society arise from parental inabilities to inculcate the right cultural and moral values in their children and wards.
Mrs Soludo, who was speaking in Awka, noted that the first and cardinal responsibility of a parent is to guide the child to be a moral mirror that represents a functional home and society, pointing out that any parent that fails in that regard has failed the entire society.
Mrs Soludo blamed parents who are setting the wrong standards for their children through their conduct for some of the challenges confronting the society.
She also blamed institutional failure for the current social problems, noting that while some parents have failed in their responsibilities, religious institutions, schools, communities and government have in some cases not lived up to expectations thereby under inning the importance of collective child upbringing.
The governor’s wife, while explaining that raising a child whose ways of life reflect a responsible home and society, is everybody’s business, reaffirmed the old-age philosophy that raising an ideal child is a community affair.
She also explained that it is important to encourage the children to embrace the values of hard work, respect, sincerity, humility, resilience, respect for their mother tongue, among others.
Mrs Soludo urged social institutions to show more commitment to the tasks of child upbringing to show more commitment to the task.
