National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has organized a workshop for employers of corps members on their one year national youth service.

The workshop with the theme, “Achieving Improved Productivity Of Corps Members Through Enhanced Welfare And Security During The Service Year”, was held at Professor Kenneth Dike E-Library Awka, the Anambra State capital.

Addressing participants, the Acting Director General of NYSC, Mrs. Christy Uba, highlighted some challenges facing corps members at their places of primary assignment to include lack of accommodation, absence of orientation on assumption of duty, improper monitoring, among others.

Represented by the Deputy Director of Accounts of NYSC, South East Area Office, Mr. Ben Chendo, Mrs Ubah, who insisted that welfare of corps members be prioritized, said the workshop was to find solutions to the challenges in order to increase productivity of corps members at their places of assignment, thereby ensuring that the scheme achieves its aims and objectives.

On her part, the Anambra State Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs. Blessing Iruma, who emphasized the need for corps members to be proactive, responsible and dedicated in their places of assignment, however noted that without prioritizing welfare, the potential of serving corps members cannot be unleashed.

She advocated that corps members at their places of primary assignments should be given an allowance of at least ten thousand naira; given the economic reality of the time.

In his remark, the Transition Committee Chairman of Njikoka Local Government Area, Mr. Clem Aguiyi, commended corps members serving in Anambra State, and assured them that their security and welfare is top priority of the government.

He urged employers to make efforts to improve corps members’ welfare, even as he solicited posting of NYSC Nurses and Doctors to man the primary healthcare centers.

The Director of Administration, Anambra Broadcasting Service, ABS, Lady Tina Ekenta, remarked that corps members posted to the media outfit have been of good behavior and that the establishment has continued to make their welfare a top priority, assuring that other challenges will be looked into.

The Chairman of Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, Anambra State chapter, Engineer Victor Meju, said COREN is also partnering with NYSC to ensure that corps member Engineers are exposed to practical engineering in order to harness their potential, instead of posting them to schools where they are redundant and their welfare not properly take care of.
