Bishop of Awka Catholic Diocese, Most Reverend Paulinus Ezeokafor has urged Nigerians to de-emphasize wealth in politics to allow for a level playing field for all to make impact in governance and enthrone Christian values in politics

Bishop Ezeokafor who was speaking during the commissioning and matriculation of New Evangelists from Fides School of Theology and Evangelization at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Awka said that acquisition of knowledge is important to make a difference in the life of people, noting that all have been called to evangelize the Gospel of Christ.

The Director of the school, Reverend Father Celestine Mounwe in his speech opined that spreading the Gospel in the present world have been challenged, as the disconnect between the church and authority is so pronounced that those who lead the people do so without conscience and moral obligation, hence the need to ensure that evangelization reaches the political class.

In his lecture, on the topic “Excessive Monetization of the political process and the consequence on governance” Professor Chukwunwuba Nweke of Nnamdi Azikikwe University, Awka, noted that the influence of money in the Nigerian polity has become a clog in the development of the nation, accusing politicians of being the biggest culprit who he said amass wealth for their selfish interest.

He advocated massive value reorientation in nooks and crannies of the country, arrest and prosecution of corrupt politicians amongst other measures to arrest the ugly trend.

Reverend Professor Boniface Obiefuna in his lecture titled “The role of Christian values in entrenching the culture of merit” lamented the negative paths the country is threading on due to bad leadership and urged leaders to have listening ears , uphold Justice always and pray for divine guidance.

Some participants, including the Catholic Men Organization Chairman for Awka Diocese, Mr. Joseph Onuegbu and Mr. Chuka Nnabuife of Anambra State Newspaper and Printing Cooperation said that values and political culture must be reversed if the country must achieve its aims and objectives.
