The United Nations Children Fund has called for adequate protection of children from adverse post effects of flooding in affected areas in Anambra State.

 

 

Speaking at a Stakeholders meeting at Achalla Awka North Council Area, UNICEF Child Protection Specialist Dr Godwin Odoh said that there is need to provide children in areas that were affected by the flooding with psychosocial support, prevent family separation and ensure reunification of separated and unaccompanied children.

Dr Odo explained that UNICEF intervention in the state flood emergency will focus on protection of children, Health, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene with funding from United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund .

In their separate remarks, a UNICEF Health specialist Dr ifenyinwa Anyanyo and Mr Timi Kiabuku said UNICEF will also focus on emergency primary Health care services and distribution of critical WASH supplies as well as provision of essential services.

In her report ,the WASH Coordinator in the area, Mrs Sabina Obidi noted that the flood affected Ugbenu,Ugbene, Orba-ofemili and Achalla, adding that houses,rice ,Cassava and yam farms were destroyed, including schools and Health centres.

 

In her remarks the Executive Secretary Anambra State Primary Health – care Development Agency Dr Chioma Ezeanyimulu said the Agency is concerned about the health of the people affected by the flooding especially children under five and explained that Health care facilities in the affected areas were used as Holding Centres while immunization exercises were carried out to protect the children from contacting diseases and thanked the state government and other partners for their concern.

 

Also speaking the Chairman Caretaker Committee Awka North Council Area Honourable Emmanuel Uchieze thanked donor agencies and the state government for their interventions while calling for more assistance to ameliorate the plight of the people affected.
