Anambra state government has restated commitment to collaboration with United Nations Children Fund UNICEF and other donor agencies on interventions in communities affected by flooding.

 

Speaking at Ogbaru Council Area during a stakeholders meeting, the State Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Engineer Julius Chukwuemeka noted that the partnership with UNICEF and donor agencies in many sectors was to save lives and respond promptly to emergencies.

The Commissioner who was represented by a Programme Manager of Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency – RUWASSA, Mr Tochukwu Nwosu said visit was for post flooding assessment of the area and to strengthen the prevention of water borne diseases as well as the maintenance of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene,WASH programme.

 

Also speaking, ,the Abambra state Hygiene Education Officer of RUWASSA, Dr Rose Amasiana, said they were engaging stakeholders in seven council areas of Anambra state, affected by the flooding, adding that they were on fact finding mission to help ascertain the level of damage done by flooding in the area.

Also speaking the Sanitation officer WASH Unit Ogbaru Council Area,Miss Linda Onyeke said the flooding affected the entire Ogbaru area, destroyed schools, hospitals and major roads while many people lost their lives.

In her speech the Sanitation Officer of RUWASSA, Miss Chielo Nwosu said the aim of the stakeholders meeting was to inform the group of the proposed WASH intervention in council areas affected by the flood.

According to her the meeting afforded members the opportunity to see the level of destruction done by the flooding.

In her contribution, the UNICEF Desk Officer Media, Mrs Franca Madike commended UNICEF and other donor agencies for their post flooding intervention programmes.
