Anambra Governor’s wife, Mrs Nonye Soludo has asked local medical service providers involved in the ongoing Rotavirus vaccination in Anambra State to ensure that every child is captured in the statewide exercise.
Mrs Soludo who stated this in Awka, also urged parents to take their children, whose age fall within the stipulated vaccination brackets, to designated public and private health care centres where the vaccines are issued free of cost.
Explaining the importance of the novel immunization programme to the health of children, the governor’s wife noted that diarrhoea-related sicknesses that are caused by Rotavirus which is one of the leading causes of death among children, can now be completely prevented when a child is fully vaccinated.
She further stated that the success of the exercise is very important, as it would lessen the burden on the state health sector with regards to managing widespread of infant killer ailments.
While commending local and international health partners including the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), among others, for aiding the new health programme, Mrs Soludo said that those in charge of issuing the vaccines must make strategic arrangements to ensure that no child is left out of programme in Anambra State.
She also urged the Anambra State Ministry of Health as well as the Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency, to follow up regularly on hospitals issuing the vaccine, take count of infants vaccinated in a given calendar in line with birth surveys for a particular time frame.
The governor’s wife also called for more enlightenment, especially for parents in the rural areas, to eliminate phobia and withdrawal, while emphasizing her earlier call that communities affected by the recent flood disaster should be given maximum attention in the rotavirus vaccination programme.
Mrs Soludo who stressed that ending infant mortality is a key aspect of the Sustainable Development Goals, also called on stakeholders including community and religious leaderships, to help parents understand importance of the rotavirus vaccination to the healthy living of their children.
