Anambra State Government, through the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning has organized a one-day workshop on social protection policy.
The seminar which was declared open in Awka by the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Ms. Chiamaka Nnake had participants drawn from different ministries and agencies as well as media practitioners.
Speaking on the aim of the workshop, Ms. Nnake noted that it was to study and adopt the national policy and framework on social protection in the state, as it would go a long way to ensure that every onye Anambra is living comfortably and above poverty line when it is carefully analyzed and implemented.
The Commissioner also expressed optimism that social protection programmes which target the poor and vulnerable population are vehicles for addressing poverty as has been successfully done in other parts of the world.
Also speaking, the Deputy Executive Director, African Network for Environment and Economic Justice, Mr. Leo Atakpu noted that from the outset in September 2020, the network’s project set out to advocate for policy reforms to address worsening poverty rates in Nigeria, and called on the National Assembly to expedite action for the passage of the harmonized social protection bill to guarantee institutionalization of protection programmes of the federal government.
some participants at the event including the Head, State Cash Transfer Unit, Mr. Raphael Enukorah, the General Manager of Anambra State Community and Social Development Agency, Mr. Chudi Mojekwu as well as the Managing Director and Statistician General, Anambra State Bureau of Statistics, Mr. Obiora Obiabunmuo, described the workshop as apt, as it will bring about change in social protection policy in the state and called for a draft to be sent to the State House of Assembly as a bill to deliberate on and be passed into law.
