A one-day summit organised by the Youth Wing of Anambra State Association of Town Unions, ASATU, Anambra Central Senatorial District, has ended with a call for conscious efforts to promote peace for sustainable development.
The event held in Awka, the Anambra State capital, had as its theme, “Peace and unity: bedrock for national development”, and was chaired by the Anambra State Chairman of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Emeka Udodeme.
Welcoming participants at the event, the ASATU Youth Leader, Anambra Central, Comrade Onyebuchi Nwobu, who explained that the annual event enables the body to review how well youths have fared and the way forward, recalled that ASATU Youth Wing was formed to foster unity and mutual coexistence among Anambra youths.
He regretted that though youths are referred to as future leaders, constituted political authorities, most times, find it difficult to give them the opportunity to prove their abilities as potential leaders.
In his keynote address, the Chairman on the occasion, Chief Udodeme, who refreshed people’s mind on how ASATU Youth Wing was formed, with the support of former Governor Peter Obi, said the youth body has helped to enthrone and sustain peace in the area, and has continued to help in grooming people for community and other leadership positions.
At the event, the Senator representing Anambra Central senatorial district, Mrs Uche Ekwunife, who highlighted the importance and contributions of youths in community development, among others, promised to continue to be a strong voice for her constituents at the Senate.
On his part, another stakeholder, Dr Kodilichukwu Okelekwe, who urged the people not to settle for better when best is available, called on the youths not to allow themselves to be used as thugs charging them to vote for a credible candidate that has their interest at heart.
Chairman of the Organising Committee for the event, Comrade Okwudili Elebo, who restated the importance of peace in sustainable development, called on youths to be actively involved in enthroning a government that will serve the interest of the masses.
The traditional ruler of Awka, Obi Gibson Nwosu, was represented by Chief Christopher Nwole, while his Ojoto counterpart, Igwe Gerald Mbamalu, was represented by Chief Amobi Adirika at the event that featured presentation of awards to different categories of people.
