As the general elections draw closer, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has made several arrangements to ensure that results from the elections are not tampered with.
On this backdrop, the commission has selected the International Conference Centre, ICC, Abuja, as the National Situation Room and Collation Centre for presidential elections.
The commission has also established two committees to man the process.
The chairman of the commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, as the chief Electoral Commissioner of the federation and returning officer for the presidential election, assisted by a few technical staff, will head the collation secretariat, where presidential results from states would be collated.
The situation room and collation center committee, which shall be responsible for the preparation of the venue, seating arrangement, utilities, services, security, accreditation of party agents, as well as the national and international observers, media, among others is to be manned by Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, National Commissioner as chairperson.
Members of the committee are Professor Abdullahi Zuru, Barrister Festus Okoye, as well as the director, Electoral Operations, Director, ICT, Director, Planning and Monitoring, Director, Security, Director, Election and Party Monitoring and Director, International Cooperation and Protocol.
Others are, Director, Research, Director, Health Services, Director, Estate, Works and Transport, Technical Adviser to the chairman, Financial Adviser to the chairman, Press Secretary to the chairman and the director, Commission Secretariat, who will also act as secretary of the committees.
A statement signed by the national Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, Barrister Festus Okoye, said that while inaugurating the situation room and collation center committees, Professor Yakubu, charged them to commence work in earnest and discharge their duties diligently.
Meanwhile, the devolution of PVC collection on ward level, commenced today sixth January 2023, and all validly registered voters, who are yet to collect their PVCs are encouraged to do so because, after fifteenth January 2023, the exercise will revert to the local government offices of the commission until twenty-second January 2023.
