The basic argument put up by opponents of democracy is that a system of government that gives power to the majority of the masses poses a risk of throwing up irresponsible leaders. In fact, they argue, that a ruderless crowd, mostly uninformed and irrrational is incapable of making sound in electing sound minds to run governments. This argument necessitated the mainstreaming of suffrage to adult male, to the nobility or to different forms and designs of electoral colleges. These restrictions, however, have been narrowed in some advanced democracies but the school of thought of democracy being a form of “mobocracy” haven’t died down especially when an irresponsible or corrupt person is elected into a place of power.
This dimension of argument, however, dies down when representatives of the people are found to be beyond reproach. When a representative elected into a particular position of government outperforms expectation. When such representative become the idealist in accountable, equal and equitable representation, transparent good governance and shows excellence in delivering the dividends of democracy to the constituents in an unparalleled and unprecedented manner. When the electorate choose the likes of Hon. Chukwuma Pius Okoye to represent them at any level of government.
When the electorate in Awka South two state constituency elected Honourable Chukwuma Pius Okoye to represent them at the Anambra State House Of Assembly, they made a bold statement that they want excellence and the best form of representation above anything else. Three years and half into the journey, Honourable Okoye has proven beyond doubt, once again, that a democratic system of government that places powers on the palms of the people is capable to deliver responsible and people oriented governments. It walks into the time tested argument of the proponents of democratic systems of government as the best for enlightened and pluralistic societies.
Honourable Okoye, Nwaanayoeze Amawbia or Ọzọ Mkpụrụ obi Obizi has outperformed expectations. The level of excellence he has registered as a lawmaker and representative of his people may not be equalled in recent history. This is unexpected anyways following his track record in other facets of life he has been including in business and community development before his foray into politics. The Lawmaker has shown his people that government is truly meant for the people and is ready to surpass the record he has set if re-elected on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in March, 2023.
He has brought quality and accessible health care to his people. Annually, Honourable Okoye conducts free dental outreach for Ndi Obizi. The exercise which lasts for days treats constituents of any form of dental illnesses while performing surgery on those with major cases. Drugs are given free of any cost. Few days ago, he laid foundation for the construction of a health centre in Uru village, Mbaukwu- the first in the area and in consonance with his commitment to helping his people have access to quality health care.
Can one easily forget the ultramodern classroom block and borehole water project at Central Primary School, Amawbia? The projects have since bettered the quality of education given to the primary school pupils in the school . Through his financing, a perimeter fencing is currently ongoing at Umuenu Community Primary School, Umuawulu to ensure security of life of the children and their teachers while studying in a conducive atmosphere.
The lawmaker’s style of leadership is audacious. Just on 20th December, 2022, he embarked on massive empowerment of his constituents. The event which attracted the Deputy Governor of the state, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim saw Honourable Okoye present 15 tricycles, 25 hair dryers, 50 sewing machines, 15 chest freezers, 12 grinding machines, 5 sienna vehicles, 1 car and 2 motorcycles to help the beneficiaries become self reliant and employers of labour. This exercise follows just few months after he empowered over one thousand widows with cash and food items to better their welfare.
Can one also ignore the how he has performed in his primary role as a legislator? Certainly, No! Honourable Okoye has moved and supported motions and bills that seek to better the lives of not just his constituents but the entire state. He is leading in Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision to make Anambra a liveable and prosperous homeland.
The unarguable truth is that Hon Chukwuma Pius Okoye, the lawmaker representing the people of Awka South two Constituency has shown capacity and forthrightness in accounting for the mandate given to him and will perform even better if Ndị Obizi, once again, stand behind him and send him back to the Anambra House of Assembly in the 2023 general elections.
