The sun has set for the late Dame Mercy Anekwe, nee Ekelem of Umuokpu Village Awka, as she was buried at her husband’s compound at Uruogbo Village, Enugu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area.

 

Being a bachelor’s degree holder in education, the late Mrs. Anaekwe’s teaching career took her to many towns and schools within the state.

 

During a funeral service at Immanuel Anglican Church Enugwu-Ukwu, the Archdeacon, Enugwu-Ukwu Archdeaconry, and Vicar of Immanuel Church Enugwu-Ukwu, Venerable Chris Ogbodo, described death as a mystery and last enemy to be destroyed, reminding all that whenever it knocks on one’s door, nothing else matters again.

 

He described the deceased as one, who within her seventy-four years on earth, made positive contributions to the things of God and society at large, and charged her family members to embrace her legacies, trusting in God and keeping the faith, even as he called on all to be mindful of the few challenging days given to man on earth, as all shall give account of their stewardship.

 

Speaking after interment, the first son of the deceased, Mr. Chukwudi Anekwe, who expressed mixed feelings burying his mother on his birthday, and the first daughter of the deceased, Ms. Ifeoma Anekwe, said the septuagenarian lived a fulfilled life; dedicated to service of God and humanity, saying that they will hold on to her legacies.

 

The traditional Prime Minister of Enugu-Ukwu and member of the extended family, Chief Dennis Anekwe, expressed belief that the ceremony will strengthen bond of unity among members of the Anekwe Family.

 

Joined in bidding the deceased farewell included the traditional ruler of Enugwu-Ukwu, Igwe Ralph Ekpeh and wife, Lolo Dorathy, Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Uche Okafor, the member representing Njikoka One Constituency, Dr. Timothy Ifedioramma, and the APGA Candidate for Njikoka One Constituency, Honourable Chidi Ibemeka.
