Goods worth millions of naira were, yesterday evening, gutted by fire in a shop situated on the second floor of TN Uzoka Plaza, Eke Awka market.
The incident, which also affected the rooftops of some shops at the same floor, was contained following quick response by the Anambra State Fire Service.
The affected shop was stocked with phone accessories, including batteries that were highly explosive.
Though the cause of the fire incident is yet to be ascertained, initial predictions suggest it might be from an electric power surge.
Speaking on the incident, the Managing Director of Anambra State Fire Service, Chief Martins Agbili said that at about twenty-five minutes pass seven yesterday evening, he got a distress call about the fire incident at the plaza, adding that he immediately deployed the state fire fighters to save the situation.
He disclosed that on their arrival, the shop that contained different kinds of phone accessories had completely burnt, but with efforts of the fire fighters, they were able to extinguish the fire and prevented it from affecting other shops.
Chief Agbili thanked the public for fighting the fire before the arrival of the fire fighters, urging residents of the state to always contact the fire service during emergencies.
The Chairman of TN Uzoka Plaza, Chief Victor Okechukwu, explained that he went to see his brother that evening when he noticed what was happening and called for intervention.
He suspected that the incident must have been caused by the inability of the shop owner to switch off electrical changeover in the affected shop.
