Stakeholders at a town hall meeting on Omabala for Senate 2023 have called for justice and equity to prevail at the February 25th elections.
The gathering which was organized by Omabala for Senate Movement led by Chief Alex Onukwue, held at Aguleri, Anambra East Council Area was aimed at outlining steps to take in ensuring that a candidate from Omabala axis of Anambra North emerge the next Senator that will represent the zone at the National Assembly.
It attracted some of the traditional rulers from communities that make up Omabala which are Anambra East and West, Ayamelum, Onitsha North and South, Ogbaru and Oyi Local Government Areas.
Some of the candidates were also present to hear from the horse’s mouth as many of them came from Omabala axis as according to them, it is their turn to go to Senate since Ogbaru, Onitsha North and South have spent thirteen years.
Addressing the gathering, the former President General, Anambra state Association of Towns Unions, ASATU, Chief Alex Onukwue who is the initiator of the group and convener of the political dialogue, tagged “Omabala for 2023” said he took the bold decision having seen the agitations of Ndi Omabala to create a forum for the political participation of Omabala people, especially for those contesting for the senatorial seat of the zone, under the platform of five pollical parties contesting for the Anambra North Senatorial District election.
Chief Onukwue, maintained that the senatorial flag bearers of these parties, have accepted that it is the turn of Omabala people to produce the next senator from the zone, except Ogbaru and there is need for the candidates to talk to themselves, with the aim of choosing a consensus candidate, pointing out that it behooves on them to strongly support the candidates from Omabala extraction.
On her part, the Co-Ordinator of Umuada Omabala, Mrs Goody Ogbogu, said Ndi Omabala should redress the present imbalance between Omabala, Onitsha and Ogbaru in the representation at the senate, adding that allowing the present occupant of the senatorial seat to do a third term is totally unacceptable as people of that region are too big to be relegated to the background and commended Chief Onukwue for the present move to unite Omabala people which she described as a wake-up call.
In an interview, the traditional ruler of Aguleri, Dr Michael Idigo, shortly after the meeting, maintained that Ndi Omabala should join hands and elect a candidate who is more qualified than dividing their votes thereby loosing the seat and affirmed that the wife of the former Governor of Anambra State, Dr Ebelechukwu Obiano is more suitable to represent Anambra North, adding that she will give them quality representation.
The Traditional Ruler of Ukwalla Community, Igwe Joseph Ajudo concurred that the area will settle for one candidate in the senatorial election, and suggested that a committee should be constituted immediately to screen all candidates in the process and any of them with wide reach, grassroot orientation and ability to deliver will be selected as the consensus flagbearer of the people of Omabala in the Anambra North Senatorial District election.
The APGA candidate for Anambra North Senatorial Seat, Dr Ebelechukwu Obiano who spoke through the former Commissioner for Works, Engineer Marcel Ifejiofor said that Mrs Obiano has sterling qualities to represent Anambra North, having been in the corridors of power where she made remarkable achievements towards the upliftment, progress and development of others and remained supportive of her husband.
