As the D-Day for the Nigeria Presidential election draws closer, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has been playing host to various groups and bodies.

Speaking when a delegation of the Commonwealth Observation Group to Nigeria’s 2023 Election, led by a former President of South Africa, Mr. Thabo Mbeki visited the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, the Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, said, the choice of who becomes what during the coming general election will be entirely the choice of Nigerians.

Professor Yakubu, who assured Nigerians of the readiness of the Commission to deliver a free, fair, credible and inclusive election, said INEC does not have any candidate of choice since it is not a political party.

Professor Yakubu, also observed that the conduct of election is a huge responsibility placed on the Commission, thereby, making the work of INEC clearly cut out with assigned responsibilities for the security agencies, parties and other stakeholders.

Earlier, the leader of the team, Mr Mbeki, said Nigeria is a very important country which controls happenings in the continent as a whole, hence the need for Commonwealth’s presence to observe the conduct of the country’s election.

He also expressed confidence that the poll would be successful, peaceful and inclusive at the end saying that the 2023 general elections is the seventh election conducted in Nigeria that would be observed by the Commonwealth Observation Group.
