The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has appealed to political parties and media organizations to draw their figures only from the official results released by the Commission as the sole body constitutionally responsible for releasing official figures for elections.

Its Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who made the appeal at the official opening of the National Collation Centre in Abuja, noted that collation of presidential election result in Nigeria is done at four levels after the conclusion of voting, counting and recording of results at Polling Unit level

He said the results are first tallied and collated at the eight thousand eight hundred and nine electoral Wards, then collated at the seven hundred and seventy-four Local Government Areas nationwide followed by the collation at each of the thirty-six States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

These collated figures for each State and Federal Capital Territory according to Professor Yakubu, are finally collated in Abuja where the announcement of the outcome of the election is made.

He said the official results will be shown on several screens at the Collation Centre for transparency adding that the commission may find it necessary to brief the nation on matters relating to the election but unrelated to the collation of results.

The official opening was witnessed by the Inspector-General of Police, agents representing Political Parties, National and International observers, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Chairmen of Electoral Commissions from parts of the world, Representatives of various security agencies and the media among others.
