The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, in partnership with the state ministry of Women and Social Welfare, has trained sixty people on Child Protection Case Management and Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Anambra State.
The training which took place in Awka included participants drawn from teachers, social welfare and health officers, religious and youth leaders of the seven local government areas hugely affected by flood.
In her opening remarks, the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo, expressed satisfaction with the commitment and dedication of the participants towards the exercise.
She urged the participants to step down the knowledge garnered during the training in their communities, to ensure that the goal of the project is achieved.
A Child Protection Specialist, Dr Victor Atuchukwu, said the three-day capacity building workshop was informed by last year’s ravaging flood in seven Local Government Areas of the State.
The Child Protection Specialist explained that the training is targeted at empowering and providing trainees with mental health and psychosocial interventions to survivors, to ensure that they are mentally stable to continue with their lives.
Dr Atuchukwu noted that the United Nations Children’s Fund is leveraging on the platform provided by the Ministries of Women Affairs, Health and Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency to provide the interventions.
