Anambra State Government has called on citizens and residents of the state to cultivate the culture of maintaining a clean and habitable environment.

 

The state Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, made the call while inspecting the ongoing evacuation of waste and desil1iting of drainages in Awka metropolis.

 

Areas inspected were St Faith Junction, Eke Awka Market, St Mary’s axis and Onwurah Street among others.

Deputy Governor Ibezim was accompanied on the inspection tour by top government functionaries and other environment stakeholders including the Transition Committee Chairman, Awka South Council Area, Mr. Thankgod Anagor, security personnel among others.

 

Speaking shortly after the inspection, Deputy Governor Ibezim, who is the chairman of Clean, Green and Sustainable Anambra Executive Committee, said that the exercise was to fulfil one of the campaign promises of Professor Chukwuma Soludo towards integrating a habitable homeland and urban regeneration for the people.

Deputy Governor Ibezim while inspecting the exercise and sensitizing Eke Awka traders, expressed dissatisfaction with the poor attitude towards the environment by traders, who use wastes generated from their daily activities to block waterways and other illegal dump sites, warning that such attitude will no longer be tolerated by the present administration as it militates against the clean, green, sustained and prosperous Anambra target.

 

On his part, the Commissioner for Environment, Engineer Felix Odimegwu, said that the state government decided to start early to take measures against flooding by embarking on campaign of desilting various drainage channels which is currently ongoing across the twenty-one council areas.

Contributing, the Commissioner for Local Government, Community and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne, the Chairman, Anambra State Urban Regeneration Council, Architect Mike Okonkwo, the MD/CEO of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, Mr. Ossy Onuko his Anambra State Waste Management Authority counterpart, Mr. Mike Ozoemena, appealed to residents of the state, Presidents General, Market and Religious Leaders as well as other stakeholders to spread the message of operation open all drainages to prevent flooding during the rainy season.

 

For Mr. Anagor, the season of neglecting the environment has gone as residents of Awka Capital Territory would be held accountable for their environment.

 

He commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his efforts and urged Ndi Awka to always obey the state sanitation law.
