Nnewi North local government area yesterday witnessed an impressive compliance by the residents during the monthly sanitation exercise.
The Nnewi North local government also launched the operation Clean, Green and Sustainable Nnewi, beginning at Bank Road.
The exercise reports that traders and residents at different points were seen moving their waste to appropriate places for evacuation while desilting work was going on in some markets and streets.
ASWAMA contracted tippers were moving around evacuating waste deposited in receptacles and the ones desilted from drainage channels.
Speaking during the exercise, the Transition Committee Chairman, Nnewi North local government area, Engineer Chris Obiorah emphasized the need for everyone to key into the Clean, Green and Sustainable Anambra initiative which was flagged off by Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Friday.
He noted that having a clean drainage channels is key to achieving a sustainable environment as flood will be controlled easily.
Engineer Obiorah called on the people of Nnewi to partner the government on environmental sustainability agenda by being environmental friendly, which according to him includes planting of trees, proper waste disposal and effective flood control system.
He assured that the local government will always be available to evacuate waste on the roads and streets and called on the people to desilt the drainages in front of their shops including banks to avoid being penalized.
The Nnewi Zonal Chairman of ASMATA, Chief Leonard Onwuatuegwu who joined in the exercise noted that markets in the area are doing their best in maintaining a clean and healthy environment as they have penalty for defaulters.
He commended Governor Soludo and the Transition Committee Chairman, Nnewi North local government area for their dedication to duty and promised the support of the traders.
An APGA Stakeholder in Nnewi, Mrs Vero Nweke and a resident, Mr Joachim Ikeanyionwu narrated their ordeal with the first heavy rain of the season and noted that the desilting of drainages will go a long way in preventing overflowing of flood in Nnewi, adding that Governor Soludo is doing well and should be encouraged to do more .
A trader at Building Materials Market Nnewi, Mr Chukwunonso Ugochukwu, said that he donated his mini truck to help evacuate the waste and to encourage people to key into the initiative of Clean, Green and Sustainable Anambra State to help Governor Soludo achieve his good vision for ndi Anambra.
The Transition Committee Chairman of Nnewi North local government area Engineer Obiorah during the exercise led his team to visit, sensitize the people and enforce compliance on streets and markets including Bank Road, Building Materials Market Nnewi, Slaughter House Nnewi, Nkwo Nnewi Market among others.
