Care, shelter and protection for victims of sexual and gender-based violence, as well as correctional homes for child offenders have been identified as priority needs in addressing issues of sexual and gender-based violence in Anambra State.

 

The Coordinator of Violence Against Persons Prohibition and Protection Laws of Anambra State 2017, VAPP, Committee, Mrs. Nkiruka Okoye, who disclosed this in an interview with Correspondent Joseph Egbeocha said there is need for successful rehabilitation of victims and child offenders before reintegration into the society.

 

Explaining that some of the victims lack the wherewithal to prosecute their cases, Mrs. Okoye however expressed appreciation over the activities of Sexual and Gender-based Violence Response Unit/Team created by the Soludo administration for sustainability of access to justice for women and children.

 

She called on government, corporate bodies and well-meaning individuals to join forces with the state ministry of women affairs for necessary supports, including running of the special courts.

 

On her part, the Attorney General of the state and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Sylvia Ifemeje, commended Governor Soludo administration for putting in place strategies, which include the establishment of special courts to help victims of sexual and gender-based violence get justice and curb the menace, adding that there is budgetary provision for prosecution of the cases.
