Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare Mrs Ify Obinabo has called on members of Mgbakwu women union to organize a fresh election following complaints by some members of the association that the elected executive should step down.
She made the call in her office when the women group brought the matter to her.
Mrs Obinabo while urging the women to organize the election as soon as possible, warned that if the election is not properly done, her Ministry will appoint new leadership for them.
Mrs Obinabo at the same time urged the women not to allow an external body to interfere in their affairs but rather give each other the needed support in order to produce a credible executive for peace and unity in the community.
Earlier, the President of Mgbakwu Women Union Mrs Ngozi Nwankwo explained that their constitution allows for two terms if re-elected but was surprised when an opposition sprung up after her re-election thereby causing division amongst the women.
Meanwhile, the Vice President Mrs Christiana Ezeudu who led the opposition group was of the opinion that Mrs Nwankwo should not be reelected rather should step down for the person whose turn it is since the position is rotational amongst the villages in their community.
Mgbakwu women had earlier staged a peaceful protest at the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare where they were received by the Director, Women Affairs of the Ministry on behalf of the Commissioner.
