The Director Agency for Mass Literacy Adult and Non-formal Education, AANFE, Mrs. Ebele Ononihu has underscored the importance of Education to development of any society.

 

Mrs. Ononihu stated this when she embarked on a one-day visit to Nnewi Correctional Centre during her interaction with the inmates undergoing Adult Education while being incarcerated.

The AANFE Director who observed that education is a powerful tool that is capable of changing the world opined that exposure to Education would reduce some of the problems confronting the society as educated people make a better society.

 

Mrs. Ononihu stated that Anambra State government is committed to eradicating illiteracy at its barest minimum, hence, the establishment of Adult Education centers across the state to enable those that missed normal education attain school no matter their age and obtain certificate up to university level, adding that ignorant is a damaging factor.

Mrs. Ononihu commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo and Commissioner for Education Professor Ngozi Chuma Udeh for their efforts in developing the education sector and called on those concerned to avail themselves the opportunity to be learned as Anambra state government has established Adult Education programme for them to be educated free of charge.

 

The AANFE Director, confirmed that the inmates are qualified to take Basic Education Certificate Examination, BECE, while those of them in the primary section are to sit for PLANCEE, which she said is equivalent to First School Leaving Certificate, FSLC, respectively.

 

Earlier in his speech, the Assistant Comptroller in Charge of Nnewi Correctional Centre, Raymond Okonkwo explained that the new vision for the facility is to rehabilitate, reform, correct and reintegrate the inmates back into the society as a better person and appreciated Anambra government for establishing AANFE, the Education Commissioner and the AANFE Director for the visit.

 

In her address, the Coordinator in charge of the adult learners at the facility, Assistant Superintendent, Correctional, ASC, Obianuju Nwizu, who gave a brief history of the school noted that they have no fewer than thirty-three students and noted that they are ready to sit for their Basic Certificate Examination, including, five in the primary section, fifteen in junior secondary and thirteen persons in Senior Secondary section, respectively.

 

She also, added that they have vocational training centres, where the inmates are trained on different skills including tailoring, barbing and carpentry.

 

One of the inmates who spoke on behalf of others lauded the Agency for finding time to visit them, and also, pleaded with the government to supply them with learning materials and skills acquisition facilities to facilitate their learning.

 

The Agency donated textbooks, and other instructional materials, that would enable them forge ahead.
