The late Dr Marcel Chikadibia Nnoba was born on January 19, 1959 to the family of Late Chief Nzedimma Christopher Nnoba of Umuodu, Umuezechiamalu family, Ugamuma village, Obosi in Idemili North L.G.A of Anambra State and Late Mrs Maria Chinyere Nzerogu of Umuonyeri village, Obosima, Imo state. He was the first child of the family.
He had his primary school education at the New Bethel Primary School, Onitsha and thereafter, gained admission into the prestigious Dennis Memorial Grammar School, D.M.G.S, Onitsha from 1972 to1976. There, he excelled brilliantly. Upon graduation from secondary school, he became an auxiliary teacher at Queen of the Rosary College (Q.R.C) Onitsha. While teaching at QRC, he gained admission to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka to study medicine and graduated in 1983. He did his house job at General Hospital, Onitsha before proceeding on the mandatory one year National Youth Service Corps programme in Imo State.
Dr Nnoba received professional training under the late Dr Osakwe, a renowned gynecologist, East of the Niger then at his hospital at St Monica’s, Onitsha and Late Dr Ukigwe of Ukigwe Memorial Hospital in Imo State. Under Dr Ukigwe, a renowned German and Russian trained Urologist, Dr Nnoba gained expertise in Urology.
He came back to Anambra and took up appointment with Holy Rosary Hospital, Umudioka in 1997 but was transferred the next year to Holy Rosary Specialist Hospital, Waterside, Onitsha. There he was nicknamed “Sharp sharp” because of his excellence, brilliance, expertise and accuracy in surgery. He rose to the rank of Chief Medical Superintendent at the hospital before he left in 2005 to join Anambra State Ministry of Health at General Hospital, Onitsha.
At the hospital, he had a clean record of zero mortality in surgery. He was an active member of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) where he served as state Chairman from 2012 to 2014. He was also a national executive member of the Nigeria Medical Association for several years.
He retired from active service as the Chief Medical Officer of Ekwulobia General Hospital, in 2019. Upon retirement, he came back to his home town and continued his practice of saving lives and to serve as visiting surgeon to different hospitals and clinics.
Dr M.C.C as he was fondly called is a devoted Christian and member of the Roman Catholic Church. He was an awardee of the Archdiocese of Onitsha stakeholders’ forum and Sacred Heart Parish, Odoakpu, Onitsha.
As a sportsman, he captained DMGS, UNN and Anambra NMA football teams. He was also a Gold Medalist at the East Central State Table Tennis Championship which qualified him for the World Table Tennis Championship in China but couldn’t make it due to his WAEC entrance examination that came up same period. He was a member of the Onitsha Sports Club where he played Lawn Tennis and DMGS Old Boys Physical Training.
Dr Nnoba was a very social and jovial fellow. He loved Music and could sing, dance and play different musical instruments very well. He was the 2013 Statesman of the year of the Nigeria Transformation Ambassadors (NITRAM) and was an associate member of the Nigeria Red Cross Society.
Dr Nnoba was married to the love of his life, Mariagoretti Ofuchi. The marriage was blessed with three children- Pamela Udochukwu, Jennifer Kosisochukwu and Victor Somtochukwu. Dr Nnoba will be greatly be missed by his family, patients and friends.
The funeral arrangements for this medical icon is scheduled to begin today at General Hospital, Onitsha where his last consultation will take place by 1pm. Tomorrow, Friday May 19, 2023, his body will be laid in state at his hometown in Ugamuma Village, Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area by 8am. It will be followed by a burial mass at St John the Baptist Catholic Church, Obosi at 10am and followed immediate ely by interment and condolence visits at his residence. On Saturday May 20, 2023, condolence visits will continue while on Sunday May 21, 2023, outing mass will hold at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church, Obosi.
