Anambra State government has flagged off the 2022/2023 leadership training for newly selected prefects of secondary schools in Anambra State.
The programme held at Christ the King College, Onitsha is a joint programme of Post Primary Schools Service Commission, PPSSC and Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB attracted prefects from across the state, teachers, officials of PPSSC and ASUBEB, among others. Education Correspondent Queen Anigbogu reports that while declaring the 2022/2023 Leadership training opened, the Chairman, PPSSC Awka, Professor Nkechi Ikediugwu described a school prefect as a student who has been meticulously selected to carry out certain responsibilities and duties, and enumerated personal qualities of a good prefect.
Professor Ikediugwu explained that leadership is all about service and inspiring people, stressing that the main duty of a prefect is to maintain an atmosphere of friendly co-operation, peace, discipline and unity in the school.
She Commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo who she said from inception of his administration placed priority on education and the Commissioner for Education, Professor Ngozi Chumah-Udeh for her tireless efforts towards issues that concern education and as well as others that contributed in making the event successful.
In her keynote address, the Executive Chairman of ASUBEB, Dr Vera Nwadinobi said the leadership training has become mandatory annual programme designed to inculcate the spirit of leadership and selfless service to mankind in the students to prepare them for their immediate roles as prefects and leaders of students in their various schools and the challenges they will encounter as leaders of tomorrow.
Dr Nwadinobi informed the gathering of Governor Soludo’s passion for children’s education and his plans and huge investments in basic education in Anambra State and expressed gratitude to him.
The Principal of the Christ the King College, Onitsha, Dr Arinze Okafor in his welcome address, charged the prefects not to take for granted the confidence and trust reposed in them by the school authority and students.
The Zonal Director of Education of PPSSC, Onitsha Zone, Lady Josephine Igboanusi, in her presentation explained that for one to be a good leader tomorrow, the person must be a good follower today, adding that this underscores the essence of the leadership training programme targeted at proper positioning of future leaders and creating leadership for a positive change.
In a lead paper presentation, the Registrar, Archibishop Charles Heerey College of Health Sciences and Technology, Nkpor, Dr Christian Ilouno, who spoke on “Leadership for positive change,’ pointed out that the leadership training emanates from the burden of systemic failure that negative leadership pattern has brought to Nigeria.
In an interview some of the prefects, including Chidiogo Ojukwu from Saint John Bosco Secondary School, Unubi and Chinemerem Ezeifeoma from Modebe Memorial Secondary School, Onitsha, assured that they will apply lessons learnt in bringing effective leadership to their fellow students.
Others who spoke during the event were Dr Cordelia Okonkwo, Principal of New Era Girls Secondary School, Onitsha, Mrs. Ndidi Ofoegbu, Mrs. Nneka Obianwu and Mrs. Ngozi Muo, Public Relations Officer, PPSSC Awka
